Energy Transition in the EU

The energy transition is fundamentally changing the way energy is produced, distributed and consumed in Europe. The transition towards a more sustainable energy system is not merely a technological issue – it affects European and national policies, energy markets, the functioning of businesses and public institutions, as well as energy security.

The course offers a comprehensive and practically oriented perspective on the energy transition in the European Union. Participants will become familiar with the main policies, actors and challenges of the European energy sector and gain an understanding of the links between energy resources, energy production, infrastructure, markets and new technologies. Attention is also paid to sustainability, carbon footprint and energy security.

The course connects the economic, environmental, technological and political dimensions of the energy transition with their practical implications. It covers the entire energy value chain – from the availability of raw materials and energy production through energy infrastructure and markets to renewable energy sources, community energy and new technologies such as hydrogen and battery storage.

Emphasis is placed on the ability to apply the acquired knowledge in practice. Through case studies, discussions with experts and their own project, participants will gain experience in analysing current energy-related challenges and developing an energy strategy in a real-world context.

Ability to analyse key actors and regional differences in the implementation and impacts of the energy transition in the EU

Ability to assess the importance of raw material extraction and electricity generation for energy transition strategies

Ability to interpret carbon footprint data and propose ways to reduce it across different sectors

Ability to apply knowledge of energy markets, grids and new technologies when developing sustainable energy strategies

Course Format and Logistics

6 tutorial blocks delivered by experts from academia and practice, complemented by independent study and activities in the Moodle LMS;
the course combines expert instruction, case studies, discussions with experts and the analysis of current challenges in the European energy sector;
the course includes a project focused on analysing an energy strategy in a real-world context and its final presentation;
Czech as the language of instruction;
the course workload corresponds to 4 ECTS credits;
the course is completed with a micro-credential issued by the Prague University of Economics and Business.
