Data Analysis for Green Transition

Data are becoming an increasingly important basis for decision-making on economic, environmental and social issues. However, their availability alone is not enough. To interpret data correctly, it is necessary to understand where they come from, how they are collected and aggregated, what their limitations are, and which indicator is truly relevant to a particular question.

The Data Analysis for Green Transition course offers a practical introduction to working with economic and other data relevant to assessing the green transition. Participants will learn how to find data in relevant databases, process and analyse them, critically assess their quality and limitations, and choose appropriate methods for their visualisation and interpretation.

The course combines an understanding of how data are generated with the practical ability to work with them. It focuses on both macroeconomic and microeconomic data and on the differences between individual data types, sources, and methods of data collection and aggregation.

Participants will gain hands-on experience in searching for and working with data from databases such as OECD, Eurostat, UN Comtrade, World Bank, Orbis, Refinitiv Eikon, and MagnusWeb. The course also covers the selection of appropriate indicators, principles of effective data visualisation, and the use of tools for data processing and analysis, including Excel and R. It also explores the possibilities of using ChatGPT when working with data.

Gained Competencies

Ability to navigate different types, structures, and sources of data relevant to the green transition

Ability to search for, process, analyse, and interpret microeconomic and macroeconomic data

Ability to critically assess data collection and aggregation methods and recognise the limitations of individual data sources

Ability to select appropriate indicators and assess the quality and reliability of data for a specific analytical question

Ability to choose an appropriate method of data visualisation and present analytical results clearly

Recommended (Target) Audience

The course is designed for:

public administration and public-sector professionals who use economic, environmental, or social data in their work;
analysts, consultants, and project managers working with data and indicators;
professionals focusing on sustainability, green transition, regional development, or public policy;
managers and specialists from the private sector who need to interpret data correctly as a basis for decision-making;
other professionals who want to develop practical skills in working with economic data and their visualisation.

Prior advanced knowledge of data analysis is not required to complete the course.

Course Format and Logistics

a practically oriented course comprising 26 hours of instruction;
the course combines work with real-world data sources, practical exercises, and individual assignments;
work with macroeconomic and microeconomic databases and tools for data analysis and visualisation;
completion of the course includes a term paper and its presentation or defence;
in-person sessions take place at the Prague University of Economics and Business;
English as the language of instruction;
the course is worth a total of 4 ECTS credits, and successful participants will receive a micro-credential issued by the Prague University of Economics and Business.
